Torque Converters at the gearbox factory

Here at The Gearbox Factory, we specialise in repairing and rebuilding torque converters of all kinds, for both industrial (forklifts, light trucks etc.) and automotive (private/trade vehicles). Our expert torque converter team has repaired over 20,000 units to date and can fully accommodate any queries or issues.

We can collect torque converters and provide return delivery to anywhere in New Zealand, normally featuring a 1-2 day turnaround (subject to parts availability).

The Torque converter is a critical component of the automatic vehicle. Simply put the torque converter is the coupling between the engine and the transmission.  By directing transmission fluid, by a series of veins, torque is produced.

It can be just as difficult to pin point a problem with a torque converter, as it is with a transmission, however here are several telltale signs indicating possible torque converter faults:

  • Shuddering – If your vehicle is shuddering when driving at speeds of roughly
40-70 km/h, (similar to the feeling of driving on a corrugated surface), a torque
    converter fault is likely.
  • Transmission slipping – If a torque converter is failing, the fluid inside will be
distributed ineffectively; if too much or not enough fluid is passed to the
transmission, it can cause gears to slip and you may feel a loss of
    acceleration.
  • Noise – Any unusual sound like clicking or a whining noise, at engine speed,
can indicate a failing  torque converter and should be investigated further by
professionals. A stripped torque converter input spline loses drive in all gears.
