Differentials, Transfer Cases & 4WD Drivetrain Services
The drivetrain of your vehicle, especially in a 4-wheel drive, is a complex system of precision components designed to deliver power to the wheels effectively. Two of the most critical parts of this system are the differential and the transfer case. We offer expert diagnosis, maintenance, and repair for all aspects of your 4WD system.
Understanding Differentials
The differential is an essential component in all vehicles. Its primary job is to allow the wheels on the same axle to rotate at different speeds when turning a corner. As your vehicle turns, the inside wheel travels a shorter distance than the outside wheel, and the differential compensates for this difference, preventing wheel hop and ensuring a smooth, stable turn.
Front-Wheel Drive (FWD): The differential is part of the front axle assembly, often called a transaxle.
Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): The differential is located in the rear axle housing.
Four-Wheel Drive (4WD): These vehicles have a differential on both the front and rear axles.
Because all of the engine’s power is transferred through the differential, it is built to be robust. However, proper maintenance is key to its longevity. The differential relies on specialised fluid to cool and lubricate the gears. Low or old fluid can cause the unit to overheat, leading to premature wear and potential failure. During any service, we inspect the fluid level and condition to ensure your differential remains protected.
The Role of the Transfer Case in 4WD Systems
The transfer case is the heart of a four-wheel-drive system. It receives power directly from the transmission and splits it between the front and rear axles, allowing all four wheels to drive the vehicle.
Transfer cases vary significantly between makes and models (e.g., a Nissan’s transfer case will differ from a Ford’s), which can make repairs and servicing complex. They are typically either gear-driven or chain-driven. Most modern transfer cases are chain-driven as they are lighter and operate more quietly.
Like the differential, the transfer case requires proper lubrication to function correctly. We recommend having the fluid level checked with every oil change.
Signs of Drivetrain Trouble
If you notice any of the following symptoms, it may indicate an issue with your differential or transfer case:
Strange Noises: Whining, howling, or grinding sounds that change with vehicle speed or when shifting gears.
Cold Weather Noises: Unusual sounds from the front of your vehicle in colder temperatures can be a sign of low lubrication.
Shifting Issues: Difficulty shifting into or out of 4WD, or the system randomly disengaging while in motion.
