CVT transmissions (belt driven) are becoming common place due to the better fuel economy they provide.  However because of manufacture licensing, the CVT belt is an expensive item if it fails and the demands placed on the belt are very high.  In the early days of CVT transmission’s parts were not available and the only solution was to replace the faulty transmission with another unit.  Thankfully things have changed and componentry is now readily available for the majority of mainstream CVT’s.

People new to driving CVT transmissions are often confused over its operation.  The best way to describe it is like a slipping clutch in a manual car i.e. the revs rise, corresponding to the pressure on the accelerator, and the road speed slowly catches up.

A major part of transmission repairing is ensuring that the control side of the vehicle is working correctly.  Modern vehicles are complex with electronics playing a major part in transmission function.  E.g. in the BMW Mini series a battery that is only marginally down on output will give all sorts of transmission problems, but will still start the car normally.

Most modern cars are equipped with an onboard diagnostic port (OBD).  To enable us to plug into the vehicle to draw information from it in the form of diagnostic codes,  The Gearbox Factory has at its disposal the latest in diagnostic technology.
