DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) 

The DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) is installed in Audi, VW and several other European vehicles.  DSG gearboxes are a new development in passenger vehicle transmissions and combine the advantages of a manual type gearbox with automatic shifting, plus a double clutch, all operated by a computer and servo motors. The double clutch is the main innovation in a DSG; it speeds up the gear changes and results in quicker shifts. 
 
The DSG dual-clutch gearbox gives the driver the opportunity to experience faster shifting, with an overall driving experience totally unlike a conventional automatic transmission. Twin electronically controlled shafts manage gear selection, always anticipating the driver’s next shift.

Consequently if the DSG presents with a fault it requires a specialist with advanced electronic diagnostic equipment to accurately diagnose, and then correctly repair the fault.

Common problems with a DSG gearbox

Most of the problems with the DSG transmission are associated with the valve body mechatronic, and support shaft bearings.

The most common problems that sometimes cannot be fixed by a service are:
 

• Flashing PRNDS in the Dash and the gearbox will switch to neutral
• Hard engaging of the 1st gear from a stand still point (slams into the first gear)
• Hard downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, and also 2nd to 1st gear (followed by some loud “clunking noises”)
• Shaking/juddering while in 2nd
• Jerking between gears
• Loss of power between 1300 – 2000 RPM
• Jolt when starting from stationary
